An in-home estimate lets a moving company calculate the cost of moving based on your furniture and other household items. In addition to calculating the moving cost, an in-home estimate can also help with insurance and keeping an inventory. In today’s post, Around Town Movers shares tips on how to ensure the success of your in-home estimate.
First, you have to find a reputable moving company that will perform a survey. This means you have to make the time to look up companies, check out their customer reviews and Better Business Bureau (BBB) ratings, and compare services. That last one is important if you have requirements like moving a piano or valuable antique furniture, or if you need help with unpacking and furniture reassembly at your new home.
Before you schedule your estimate, clearly label the furniture and the contents that you will not take with you. Taking inventory during this stage will also give you time to organize furniture and other items that you’re planning to sell.
If you can’t be physically present during the survey, you need to have one decision maker present for your appointment. Be prepared to show the moving company’s representative all the rooms in the house, including the attic, garage and basement. In case an item isn’t included in your initial inventory, you’ll have someone to decide whether or not it will be moved.
Make the most of the survey by preparing a list of questions before your appointment. You’ll probably want to know if they offer packing services or, perhaps, even ask for tips on how to pack certain materials. Ask them about how the boxes and furniture will be secured in the truck and whether or not you will need to provide safety blankets to protect your items from damage en route.
