Transporting a Fridge: Do’s and Don’ts

Moving a fridge is not an easy task and requires proper preparation. Knowing the things you should and should not do when moving your fridge is crucial in ensuring the safe transportation of your appliance.

Do’s

Securing Refrigerator Parts

After emptying your fridge, remove glass drawers, shelves and any loose parts. Clean, dry and pack them separately for moving to avoid any item sliding around inside the fridge during transportation. Then, secure the door with a moving strap so it will not open once it’s on the dolly. For an extra layer of protection, wrap your fridge with a padded cover.

Protecting Your Floors

Since refrigerators are heavy, there is a high chance that you will need to slide them on the ground before loading them onto the moving dolly. To prevent scratching your floors, use furniture sliders or rubber mats for safer and easier sliding. You can also tilt your fridge slightly back and slide the protectors under, and then slowly pull the fridge side to side to move it forward.

Don’ts

Failing to Measure the Entrance and Exit Points

Before moving your fridge, don’t forget to measure your refrigerator, doorways and stairwells to ensure your appliance and the dolly will fit through those spaces. Otherwise, it will be difficult for you to navigate heavy appliances throughout your home without knowing whether or not they will fit the entrance and exit points.

Leaving Contents Inside

To prevent food from falling from your fridge during the move, dispose of or give away anything that you will not be eating before the move. If it’s just a shot-distance move, you can store your leftovers in an ice cooler with enough ice to keep them at a safe cooling temperature.
