If you’re in your empty nester phase, you may find your home too big and too quiet after your adult children have moved out. You’re probably considering moving to a home that’s more appropriate to your needs. In today’s post, we discuss important things you need to know before you consider moving.
Your home probably has several bedrooms that haven’t been occupied in a while. You’ve probably converted them to a home office, hobby room or a storage room. Or they may be just being used as guest rooms. Downsizing your home to just what you need has several benefits – lower mortgage, reduced utility costs and maybe even a decrease in property taxes. Downsizing is also an opportunity to add features that you’ll need in your later years, like fewer stairs and a bathroom with grab bars and anti-slip flooring. You can also choose to have features that will let you do things you’ve always wanted to do, like a large backyard for gardening or space for your woodworking projects.
Decluttering is the first step to preparing for a move. For empty nesters, some of the things that others may consider as trash could be keepsakes that you’d want to keep – old photos, old report cards and your kids’ drawings, to name a few. It’s perfectly fine to keep these things; however, you need to consider where they will be stored. If your new home doesn’t have extra space, consider renting a self-storage unit.
Moving as empty-nesters is different than as a newly minted family. You won’t have to arrange accommodations for your kids as you prepare for the move, you’ll be packing fewer items (maybe even leave more than a few pieces of furniture behind), and your adult children may even be available to help you pack.
