5 Important Things to Do Before Moving to a New Apartment

Moving into a new apartment takes a lot of work, but some planning and preparation can make the process easier to manage. In today’s post, local moving company Around Town Movers discusses things that you should add to your to-do list before moving to a new apartment.

  1. Find a reputable moving company. Once you have signed the lease and decided on the date for moving in, shortlist local moving companies. The earlier you get started on this, the more time you will have to compare services, research qualifications and customer feedback, and compare quotes. If you have particular needs like accessibility equipment or unusually large furniture, make sure to ask your prospective movers if they offer this service.
  2. Measure windows and doorways in the new apartment. One of the worst things that could happen during a move is finding out you can’t fit that grand piano through your new apartment doors. Make it a point to measure your new apartment’s doorways and the street-facing windows, in case your movers need to move anything that way. Find out if your furniture can be disassembled for moving so you can decide if you’ll bring them with you.
  3. Transfer utilities and services. Don’t forget to contact your utility companies and schedule the transfer of services like electricity, gas and water to your new apartment — or you may need to set a date for cancellation.
  4. Set up mail rerouting. Visit your post office and submit a permanent change-of-address request for proper mail rerouting. Ideally, this should be submitted about two weeks before your move. Also, make sure that you update government agencies and companies like banks, insurance and online stores with your new mailing address.
  5. Talk to your movers. Moving companies like us can help you organize your move. If you’re having trouble getting started on your packing, we offer services that can make the process easier for you. Packing supplies, disposal of materials that you won’t be taking with you, managing moves for seniors — all of these can be organized beforehand.
