Packing an “Open First” Box: An Overview

Moving to a new residence requires careful thought and thorough preparation. If you’re hiring professional movers to help you move your possessions to your new place, one of the most important things you need to consider is a box full of your essentials, also known as an “open first” box. It should contain all you need until the rest of your belongings are delivered to your new home.

To help you pack your essentials box, Around Town Movers provides an insightful overview of what you need to include in your open first box.

Why Pack an Open First Box?

If you’re moving across the country, you’ll likely be separated from your belongings for a long time. Your possessions will be taken by the moving company you’ve hired, and you may not see them again for several days or even a week. While waiting for the rest of your belongings, you may need to use the bathroom, eat a meal, take a shower or deal with a minor emergency while in your new place.

For this reason, your open first box should contain the most basic necessities you’ll need to get by until the rest of your belongings are delivered. An open first box also saves you the time from constantly running to the nearest convenience store.

What Should You Pack In Your Open First Box?

When packing your open first box, you may have a hard time deciding which items are truly essential or not. We recommend you pack your open first box with any of the following:

  • Personal Care Items
These should include hygiene essentials like deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, makeup and hairbrush.
  • Clothes
Each family member should have a bag with extra clothes. Be sure to check the weather conditions and forecast in your area for the next few days and pack accordingly. Don’t forget to bring socks, underwear and a pair of comfortable shoes.
  • Toilet Paper and Hand Soap
Toilet paper and a bottle of hand soap should be available for your new bathroom.
  • Utensils and Snacks
Since your movers will be responsible for bringing your usual plates and utensils, pack paper plates and plastic cups as well as a few snacks in your open first box. You should also include storage bags and garbage bags for trash.
  • Bedding
Your bed may not arrive for another week, so be sure to pack sheets, pillows and a blanket to stay comfortable while waiting for your things.
  • Medicine
If you or any family member takes any prescription medicine, include them in your box. A first-aid kit is also a smart addition, as well as painkillers, allergy medication, and vitamins.
  • Documents and Valuables
This should include passports and small valuables, such as jewelry. Before placing them in the box, make sure your documents are in a storage bag or manila envelope.
