The Big Move to College: Mistakes to Avoid While Packing

A lot of students find moving to a new city to start college exciting and, at the same time, frightening. Of course, you should make a checklist of the things you’ll be needing. But you shouldn’t go overboard with the preparations either.

Overpacking and Underpacking

Most students overpack or underpack because they didn’t list down the essentials like bedding, mattress toppers, a toothbrush, pens and notepads. The last thing you want is to finish unpacking at your new dorm only to find out you’re missing something.

Unpacking and adjusting to your new dorm take up a lot of your time, which means you probably won’t have the time or energy to shop for the things you forgot to pack.

Not Arriving Before Your Time Slot

You’ll be given a timeslot, and it would be a good idea to arrive at your dorm early. Never underestimate traffic. At the very least, you’ll waste 45 minutes stuck waiting in your car.

One way of making sure you’ll have enough time is to pack at least two days before your move to college. But if you just don’t have the time and will be driving a long distance, it would be a good idea to hire one of your local movers.

Not Checking the Dorm’s List of Banned Items

You might be thinking of bringing appliances like toasters, air conditioners and hot plates, but these might be banned at your dorm. To make sure you don’t accidentally bring any banned items, check your dorm or college’s list of banned items.

Preparing for college and moving to another city is a big task. And, you can make it a lot easier by hiring one of your local movers.
