The Big Move Out, Part 1: 5 Planning Tips for Your Move Out

Moving involves a lot of physical and mental stress with the amount of heavy lifting, planning, and coordinating with movers. Plus, you have to somehow fit all of it into your daily routine leading to the big day. At Around Town Movers, we know how that feels, which is why we’ve prepared this two-part guide to preparing for your big move.

In our first part, we share tips on how to plan for and streamline your move.

  1. Don’t pack at the last minute – When you wait until the last minute to pack, you likely end up with a disorganized mess, wasted packing space, and more stress. Buy your cardboard boxes, packing peanuts, bubble wrap, and other packing items a few weeks in advance. By spreading your packing schedule over a few weeks, you make more for your day-to-day activities. Alternatively, you can talk to our representatives about providing packing supplies ahead of time.

  2. Prep the house ahead of time – It’s much easier to clean and paint your new home when it’s still empty, so schedule permitting, get this done before you move in. You also give the paint smells time to dissipate.

  3. Don’t bring everything – Take packing as an opportunity to declutter. Have a separate box for things that you don’t use anymore, like old clothes, books, and redundant furniture. Sell these items or donate them to your local charity, or ask your moving company to do it for you. Also, save on space and packing materials by using your pillowcases, towels, and other soft materials to protect your breakables instead of buying bubble wrap.

  4. Keep an inventory – Make a detailed list of the contents of every box for those items that you end up moving, so you can make sure everything is complete upon delivery. Mark the boxes where you intend to place them so you don’t have to point the boxes out after unloading.

  5. Keep a “load-last” box – Prepare what is essentially your “survival kit” for the first couple of days in the new place. This should include toiletries, sheets, clothing, medication, perhaps even some ready-to-eat food if the gas isn’t turned on yet when you arrive. This box should be loaded last.
