Move for Hunger is the American Moving and Storage Association’s official charity partner. It’s a non-profit organization that partners with movers to fight hunger and reduce food waste.
The Cost of Food Waste
Around 40% of food produced every year in the U.S. ends up in landfills or is left to rot. For a country where 42 million experience hunger every day, so much food gets thrown out or uneaten. Every level of the supply chain, from farms to stores and homes, wastes perfectly good food.
Author Jonathan Bloom mentioned in his book, American Wasteland, that families throw out at least 25% of the food and beverages they buy. That’s a loss of $1,000 to $2,200 yearly. Fortunately, there are ways you can reduce food waste. The National Resource Defense Council says that just 15% of the food wasted each year is enough to feed 25 million Americans.
How Move for Hunger Works
If you’re moving, and you don’t plan on bringing unopened food items with you, then it’s best to donate them. Local families in need would benefit a lot from your non-perishables. Move for Hunger works with local movers to collect unwanted or unopened food. To date, it has collected nearly 10,000,000 pounds of food.
All you have to do is set aside the food items you wish to donate. The organization’s crew will pack the food and bring it to the local food pantry. There, your donations will be sorted and delivered to local families in need.
