Moving Company Red Flags

There are a lot of things you need to think about when you’re relocating to another home. From the packing to your moving company, it’s pretty understandable if you would like to stop and take a breather for a moment. However, if you’re hiring a moving company, you not only have to keep your options open, but you also have to look for any red flags that show you’re about to be scammed by your potential company.

They Don’t Have a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Number or a U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Number

Moving companies are required by law to have a FMCSA or a USDOT number. That way they’re registered in the databases, and you can track them down should anything happen to your items. If your local movers don’t have one or refuse to tell you, that’s a red flag, and they might not be a legal company or even a moving company at all.

They Refuse to Answer Questions

When choosing your moving company, there are numerous things you should ask them, such as their claims filing process and other basic questions that come to mind. A reputable moving company will want you as informed as possible to avoid any problems, but a rogue company, on the other hand, will hold back such information to avoid any responsibility for damaged or lost items. If they refuse to answer such questions, then it’s time to move on and look for other moving company options.

They Refuse to Do an In-home Estimate

An in-home estimate is the best way to get an accurate quote from your movers. If they refuse to conduct an in-home estimate and submit a thorough inventory on your home, don’t move forward with their services. This could mean they’re relying on the fact that you’re underestimating what you need, which, in turn, can give them an excuse to raise their prices with undocumented charges during the move itself.

They Don’t Own Their Own Trucks

Any sane moving company will have their own fleet of trucks, but less-than-reputable companies will use unmarked trucks. Don’t hire the moving company if this is the case. Otherwise, your belongings will be significantly harder to track when they go into an unmarked truck. This could make stealing your items significantly easier for the scammers.
