Packing up furniture and clothes can be as easy as placing them into boxes and waiting for the moving company to come to pick them up. It’s a little more complicated when you’re dealing with living things, i.e. your pets and, of course, indoor plants. Having a great collection of lush greens inside your home is a decorative paradise, but when you’re moving they present their own unique set of challenges.
The number one issue plants have against extended road trips is staying hydrated. Make sure that all your plants are well-watered at least two days prior to the big day. Give your movers a heads-up that you’re also packing some plants along with your furniture so they can take extra precaution. The night before, wrap a plastic cover around the base of your potted plants, and stuff it with old newspaper to reduce the risk of leakage.
Build a handy kit that’s specifically for taking care of your plants in transit. This kit should include garbage bags, old newspapers, heavy-duty and waterproof packing tape as well as a couple of boxes. Give larger plants a good pruning as well to make them much less cumbersome during the move.
Plants may seem like stoic little things, but they can also experience some stress. Once everything is settled, place your indoor plants for temporary storage in a room beside a window where they will get plenty of sunlight. As soon as you’re ready to put them in their permanent places, they’ll be back to their healthy normal selves in no time.
