How Soon Should I Hire A Mover?

Organizing a house move is a daunting, but exciting task. The prospect of moving to a new neighborhood and the opportunity to meet new people helps you get motivated for the challenge. Some people prefer spontaneity while others prefer to organize and prepare meticulously for the future. Today, we’ll help you decide how far ahead you should book a moving company to help you with your relocation.

How Close Is the Move Date?

If you plan on moving during peak times (e.g. spring, summer, the first and last days of the month, weekends, holidays, etc.), we highly recommend scheduling your move two months prior to your desired moving date. Movers are in high demand during these months so expect them to be fully booked or have a long waitlist. Be sure to book your relocation partner as soon as possible in order to avoid the rush as you might be left with limited to no choices at all at a premium. On the other hand, if you decide to move during the off-peak season, a four-week notice should suffice to get a reputable, affordable mover.

How Far Am I Moving?

Generally, the farther away you’re moving, the earlier you should book a mover. Listed below are the best times you can book a mover depending on the distance.

  • Across town – You can contact your mover two weeks before your relocation. Since it’s a short-distance trip, it can easily fit into the movers’ schedule.
  • Same-state – Contact your mover a month before your relocation. This will be ample time for them to map out the logistics of an intrastate move.
  • Interstate – Book your mover two to three months prior to your moving date. Long-distance movers will need more time to coordinate the logistics and pick-ups of deliveries depending on the distance of the move, not to mention additional requirements depending on the state.
  • Overseas – If you plan on moving overseas, make sure that you hire reputable movers three to four months in advance. The logistics behind a move abroad need meticulous planning, organization and cross-checking to ensure the freight has no issues moving overseas.

How Hard Is the Job?

It’s a courteous gesture to let your mover know how big the job will be. This is especially true if you are moving fragile or specialty items that need special tools or moving supplies that wouldn’t usually be available on a normal move. You should also take into account the volume of cargo you are moving as it factors into how soon you should be booking a mover.
