Fully Booked: How to Properly Pack Books When Moving

Perhaps one of the greatest challenges faced by book aficionados when moving is packing their beloved hardbound editions and paperbacks in such a way that won’t damage them. If you’re facing this same kind of problem, worry not. Your preferred professional movers at Around Town Movers share valuable tips and tricks on how to pack your prized possessions when moving.

Selection Process

If you’re going to be charged by weight of your belongings, make it count by carefully choosing which books you’ll be taking with you and which ones you have to part with. Try to look for public libraries where you can donate your beloved books. You may even contact charities advocating literacy to make sure your books go towards a worthy cause instead of merely being discarded.

Remember that parting with some of your books may not be the most pleasant task, but streamlining your book collection before relocating can make your new home feel like the fresh start that it is, not to mention you’ll incur less costs from your local movers.

Materials

Large, sturdy boxes are essential to any relocation endeavor. For your books, make sure to use clean and dry boxes. Don’t forget to tape the bottom of these boxes so your books don’t fall through. Prepare brown paper and acid-free paper. Wrap hardcover editions of moderate value with brown paper and high-value books with acid-free paper.

Packing Techniques

Hardbound books can be packed upright. Take care not to pack them too tight so you’ll have an easier time unpacking them. Books that are on the more fragile or high-value spectrum should be covered by either brown or acid-free paper. You should also line the box with bubble wrap before packing these types of books. You can pack both hardcover and paperback books spine-first, with the paper edges facing upwards. Larger books can be packed flat to save space.
