4 Ways to Practice Sustainability While Moving House

When you’re in the process of moving, you need to be practical about what you’ll keep and what you’ll donate or sell. But sometimes you’re not sure how you’ll sort out some of your items. If you want to be more organized as well as sustainable and eco-friendly during the moving process, here’s a few tips that can surely help you.

1. If You Need More Boxes, Get Used Ones

In order to move with minimal impact on the environment, get as many used boxes as possible. You can get used boxes from friends and family or even the local supermarket and retail store so long as you ask if they can spare a few extra ones. You can put out a post on social media as well. If you’ve already been storing used boxes, then this is the perfect time to use them once again. Just remember to buy new boxes only as a last resort.

2. Use Containers You Already Have

At times you can never have enough boxes. But then you won’t actually need any more boxes if you use your existing containers to store your items in. We highly recommend using any existing reusable tote bags, plastic bins, dresser drawers, suitcases, gym bags and even duffel bags to pack your items. Every owned container you use for your items is one less moving box you need to purchase.

3. Recycle or Donate What You Don’t Need

Sorting what is and is not needed is a part of any moving process. You need to take the time to choose which furniture, appliances and other household equipment should be appropriate for your new home. Trim down your wardrobe as well if possible, taking only the clothes that are deemed essential and leaving the old ones. But don’t just throw all your unwanted items away. Instead, donate the reusable ones to the appropriate charity of your choice.

4. Use Alternatives to Plastic Covers

Plastic can make a big impact on the environment, especially if it’s not handled and disposed of properly. So, if you want to be more eco-friendly during the moving process, don’t use those big heavy plastic sleeves for your mattresses and upholstery. Instead, try using muslin fabric or even a painter’s drop cloth. These are materials that can still be utilized even after you’ve moved in and settled in your new home. The muslin can be used as an outdoor tablecloth or cut into rags to clean dust and grime. Meanwhile, the drop cloth can easily be used as a picnic blanket.
