Take the time to get your packing organized to minimize stress. A hassle-free move can go a long way, especially since you need to reserve energy for when you arrive at your new home. As your expert movers, we share some practical packing tips:
Create an Inventory – Start a running inventory of everything that you pack, and track how many boxes with which you end up. This is particularly important when loading everything into the truck as you’ll avoid those “did I bring everything?” moments en route. If you need to keep some of these boxes in storage, whether temporary or long-term, leave a copy of the inventory with each box so you don’t need to have a copy of the master list with you.
Keep Essentials Within Reach – We recommend having essentials, such as a few days’ worth of clothes, toiletries and footwear, stored in a piece of luggage, separate from the rest. This eliminates the frustration of hunting for the basics if you’re too tired to start unpacking when you arrive at your new home.
Clean and Vacuum Your Belongings – If you have items that you think won’t get unpacked days after the moving company unloaded your last box, ensure that everything is clean before you put them in boxes. This is especially true with clothes, shoes and paper-based items that may grow mold and mildew, which is more likely to happen if you’re putting some of these boxes in storage. If available, wipe everything down, and have packets of silica gel or dehumidifiers to help absorb moisture within the boxes.
Label Your Boxes Clearly – Labeling the boxes according to destination may work, but if you have several of these boxes with the same labels, it can get confusing when it’s time to unpack. Instead, label them with more descriptive names like “pots and pans” or “bedroom linen.” If possible, use clear plastic bins for easier visual identification.
