Organizing: Making the Most of Your Storage Unit

Maximizing every bit of space is key to getting your money’s worth with storage units. This is where some organizational know-how comes in handy. The better you are at organizing things, the less wasted space there you’ll end up with.

Here are some of the tried-and-true tips and tricks we learned in our decades as expert movers in Ashburn VA, which should help you get the most out of your storage unit.

  1. Use tall shelves. The objective here is to maximize the use of vertical space. Just make sure the base is stable; the last thing you need is an entire shelf falling over.
  2. Use pallets on everything not on shelves. Ask any of our local movers in Arlington, VA, for help with keeping your items above floor level. While we take every measure to keep the insides dry, there’s a chance that water could still seep in – anything from snow to a mystery spill from an adjacent storage unit.
  3. Label everything. It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many people neglect to label their bins and later spend hours trying to find a single item. Use whatever labeling system works for you – it could be as simple as writing “books” or advising our piano movers Maryland. In can also be as detailed as an inventory with spreadsheets and color-coding.
  4. Regulars up front. If you have items that you need to access regularly, put them in separate, clear bins that are easily accessible from the front.
  5. Use plywood to stabilize stacks. If your boxes and bins don’t stack well, use plywood to spread the weight evenly. Or just buy stackable bins – just remember to check how many levels can be stacked.
  6. Create aisles. This is another tip that seems obvious, but many people actually start with a corner and just let things accumulate from there, making looking for anything extra difficult.
  7. Security: use bolt cutter-proof padlocks. A cursory online search for the phrase “security padlocks” yields hundreds of variations on the theme. Look for disk padlocks, or at least a padlock with thick but very short shackles, as they offer little or no space for bolt cutters.
