The best way to avoid problems during your big move is to plan ahead. We’re not talking of just a few days or even weeks before the move; the earlier you start planning, the less likely will you be caught off-guard by logistical problems.
Make a list
Lists are awesome; they let you keep track of everything that’s related to moving. However, that’s only true if you know what should be listed down. Categorize items to help sort them out better, but do be specific to an extent. For example, you can put silverware under “cutlery” instead of lumping it together with all the other “kitchen” stuff.
Color coding
Use color to your advantage and keep items that belong to the same part of the home in same-colored boxes. Red boxes can be for bedroom stuff, while kitchen items could be in blue ones. This helps you instantly sort out items the moment they arrive.
Have supplies
Make sure you have enough packaging materials ready. There should be enough to spare even after all the items you own appear to have been packed. One of the worst things that can happen is to run out of packaging material, then discover that you have to reopen a box. You’ll certainly need to be prepared to re-seal the box. You’ll also want to enough boxes to allow you to caterogize everything properly.
Pack in advance
Some people make the mistake of holding off on packing until the last minute. This means they end up rushing things, which could lead to big problems later on. The earlier you pack, the more time you can take sorting through your things properly.
Update your address
You wouldn’t want mail or calls directed to your old address. Make sure you update your address before making the move. This is especially true when moving office, when a missed call could mean a missed business opportunity!
