Moving is a big undertaking, and there are a lot of things to think about when you’re getting ready for your big day. Packing clothes may seem like a daunting task, but with a little planning and these helpful tips, you’ll be able to get it done in no time.
Purge and Sort
Before you start packing up your clothes, take some time to go through your clothing and decide what you’re going to keep and what you can get rid of. This is a great opportunity to purge your closet of items you don’t often wear or no longer fit into. Donate these items or sell them online – either way, they shouldn’t be taking up space in your new home.
Sort your clothes by pieces (pants, shirts, dresses, etc.) and put them together so you can organize your closet better after the move. If you’re packing for your family, remember to keep everything separate for each person. Once you’ve sorted through everything, make sure all the items you’re keeping are clean and free of wrinkles.
Choose the Right Packing Method
You can use the following to pack up your clothes for a move
- Cardboard boxes – Suitable for packing folded clothing
- Wardrobe boxes – Excellent and perfect for packing clothes on hangers
- Suitcases and duffel bags – Best alternative to cardboard boxes
- Vacuum bags – A great way to condense bulky clothing items
Choose the option that works best for you and be sure to label all of your containers so that you know where everything is when it comes time to unpack at your new home.
How to Pack Hanging Clothes
If possible, hang as many clothes as possible on hangers before packing them away. This will help minimize wrinkles and make unpacking easier later on. For clothes that need to be hung up, we recommend using wardrobe boxes. Simply take the hangers out of your closet, and put them in the box with your clothes still on them.
How to Pack Non-Hanging Clothes
For non-hanging clothing, use suitcases, duffel bags, or storage bins. Be sure to pack these items loosely so that they don’t wrinkle during the move. You can also use vacuum seal bags for extra protection against wrinkles (just be sure not to overfill them).
How to Pack Delicates
Delicates are any clothing items that are made of fragile fabrics or have embellishments that could be easily damaged. These items include things like lace, sequins, beading and fur. The best option is to use garment bags or boxes lined with soft paper or acid-free tissue paper. Be sure to wrap each item individually and then place it in a box or suitcase.
How to Pack Shoes
Shoes can be tricky to pack since they tend to be bulky and take up a lot of space. Don’t just put all your shoes in a duffel bag and move them this way! It’s good to do a bit of preparation so your shoes don’t get damaged in transit. To keep their shape, stuff your shoes with washcloths, socks or paper. Wrap them in packing paper before putting them in boxes or hard shell suitcases to avoid scuffing.
