Ask anyone who’s had to change houses more than once, and that person will be quick to tell you that the garage is one of the most difficult places to pack up before a big move. People tend to save this room for last when their energy levels are running low, making the task more difficult. The garage is also the place where we tend to store most of our large (and mostly unsorted) items. But fret not! Packing up your garage shouldn’t be too complicated as long as you follow these three tips.
1. Start Sorting Early
As mentioned above, the garage is difficult to pack largely because of the sheer amount of random items we have stored in it. For this reason, it will be very helpful to start sorting these items early. Designate two separate areas or piles while sorting out your stuff: one pile for the things you plan to bring with you and another for the stuff that’s staying behind.
2. Organize a Garage Sale
Once you’ve successfully sorted the things in your garage, you’ll probably have a large “leave behind” pile. If a lot of these things are still in good condition, consider selling them at a garage sale. You can also add other things from the rest of your home that you’re not planning to bring with you. This way you can make a few extra bucks that can go towards the cost of hiring professional movers.
3. Stock up on Packing Supplies
Having the right supplies can make packing a lot easier. Stock up on moving boxes of different sizes, colored markers, furniture blankets, bubble wrap and plastic bags. It may seem like a lot, but most of these are things you may likely already have lying around.
